After you have established a connection, the other software should function. Try clicking on Netscape. The Internet should unfold before your eyes. ====== Setting up Eudora =============================================== 1) In Eudora, go to the SPECIAL menu and select CONFIGURATION. 2) Enter the following by clicking on each respective box and entering the requested information: POP ACCOUNT: acctname@lyonesse.membrane.com (where acctname is your account name) REAL NAME: Your real name. SMTP SERVER: lyonesse.membrane.com RETURN ADDRESS: Your Email address, usually acctname@lyonesse.membrane.com CHECK FOR MAIL: This will determine how often Eudora will automatically check for new mail. Set it to your preference. PH SERVER: Blank, for now. The other settings are for the program environment, and are set to your preferences. 3) Click OK to save changes. 4) If you don't want to have Eudora prompt you for your password at each manual mail check (with CTL-M), then go to SPECIAL and select SWITCHES. You will see a window of various boxes to configure. At the top-center is the CHECK OPTIONS box. The first switch is for SAVE PASSWORD. Click the box next to it to select it. This will enable Eudora to remember your password after the first time you type it in. Click OK to save changes. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- NETSCAPE: Upon first running the program, you will need to set up some of the features by selecting PREFERENCES from the OPTIONS menu. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- WS_FTP: Remember, when FTPing to a particular site, do so between 5PM and 6AM local time at the site, as the site's computers may be occupied during business hours. When the program is started, you will be placed in the SESSION PROFILE window. You can define separate profiles for each major site you access. Here is what you can enter in this window for a typical session: HOST NAME: The FTP site you want to go to. (ex: ftp.uu.net or lyonesse.membrane.com) USER ID: Anonymous for most FTP sites. PASSWORD: Your email address (myname@lyonesse.membrane.com) (If you check the SAVE PASSWORD box, This will remember it for all anonymous logins.) REMOTE HOST (DIRECTORY): Where you want to be at the remote site. Usually this will be in the /pub directory, but this varies according to site. LOCAL PC: Your local directory for uploading/downloading files. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- TELNET: You can connect to any server in the world by entering its hostname (ex: 198.70.186.1) in the HOST window. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- PING: A diagnostic for testing your PPP connection. Select ASYNCHRONOUS PING (BLOCKING PING isn't recommended), and enter a host name or address in the specified windows. Clicking OK will send a data packet to the address, and then bounce it back to your local system. Ten packets are sent out and back. At the end of the pinging process, statistics are displayed, including the percentage of packet loss. If this value is high (ie. 20% or more), then you likely have a poor PPP connection.
